The 1907 Volunteer was dedicated to the 55th Tennessee General Assembly for appropriating $100,000 to UT. At that time there was no guarantee of an annual appropriation from the legislature.

Ant and Roach Insecticide

Ant and roach hotels and other devices designed to kill such household pests owe a debt to UT’s entomology faculty member, Brooks D. Drain. In 1935 Dr. Drain developed an inexpensive way to obtain chemical pyrethrum, which he extracted from chrysanthemum blossoms. The Gulf Refining Company cooperated with Drain in extending the research.

UT Mail Services was evacuated October 16, 2001, for several hours after a white powdery substance was found in a hamper, as outbreaks of anthrax scares and actual contaminated letters spread across the country. The material in the hamper was found to be safe.

Antifraud Fee for Hiring Foreign Nationals

Hiring foreign faculty, researchers, and medical residents required payment of a $500 antifraud fee to petition for the H-1B visa, effective March 8, 2005. Institutions were also required to compensate foreign professionals at 100 percent of the prevailing wage. Previously, 95 percent of the prevailing wage had been required.
