When the UT radio station went on the air in 1949, the station’s antenna was mounted on the top of Ayres Tower. In keeping with the Civil Aeronautics Authority and International Signal Code regulations, the antenna was painted in bold, broad stripes of orange and white. Erection of the antenna brought protests from faculty and others that the architectural dignity of Ayres Hall was compromised. The tower was moved to the old fruit farm to the west in 1955, and the station was moved from Ayres to the Communications Building in 1969.
