Community Garden

The student organization Project V.E.G.G.I.E. (Vols Educating about Growing Gardens and Inspiring Environmentalism) was founded in 2011 by Candice Lawton and Neil Brown. A community garden, adjacent to the tennis courts behind the Andy Holt Avenue parking garage, was initiated in 2012.

David Van Vactor, head of the Fine Arts Department and then the separated Music Department and conductor of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, was named Composer Laureate of Tennessee by the Tennessee State Legislature.

Computer Crimes Policy

UT issued its first policy dealing with computer crimes in 1986. Effective July 1, 1986, employees or students caught committing computer crimes could face expulsion, termination of employment, and prosecution under Tennessee’s Computer Crimes Law enacted in 1983. Chancellor Reese had issued a memo to all employees in January 1985 about computer ethics.

Computer Loans Available to Faculty and Staff

A program was implemented in late spring 1984 through which microcomputers could be purchased at substantial discounts and paid for through interest-free loans by faculty and staff. Computer Security Breach, 2005

A mistaken configuration of archives on the main UT computer system led to the posting of the social security numbers of approximately 1,900 students and a small number of UT staff on an archives page of a listserv. There was no evidence that third parties had utilized the numbers.
