In August 1999 the College of Engineering announced a joint online program in maintenance and reliability with Monash University of Melbourne, Australia. The Australian university’s distance education programs served more than 12,500 students around the world. In North America, undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificates were offered by the joint program.

The UTK Memes Facebook page joined Facebook on January 15, 2012, and first posted on February 15, 2012. The page is designed to provide humor and insight into the life of a UT college’s student’s experiences and thoughts. Just five months into creation, the page had accumulated over ten thousand likes.
The UT Police Department made available a smartphone app in fall 2013 that allowed individuals to send anonymous crime tips to UTPD and to send photographs. Anonymous text messages were also available, to 847411 (tip411), with the keyword UTPD.

Begun in 1984, the VAN (Volunteer Alumni Network) program is a recruiting device in which alumni open their homes for parties to which the top 5 percent of high school juniors and seniors in the area are invited. Van service, initially established to transport the disabled during the day and to provide a safe means of moving about the campus after dark, was established by the UT Police Department in 1980. Operation of the van service was transferred to Parking Services in summer 1992.
