Students residing in residence halls could opt in for call waiting beginning fall 1992. In 2001 an improved version of call waiting, along with caller ID, call forwarding, call block, and call return was made available to students in residence halls and at UT-owned apartment facilities.

Five-digit dialing began on December 22, 1986, as part of the expansion of telephone service to provide a private telephone line in every dormitory room. The previous practice of dialing only the last four digits of an on-campus number was made obsolete by the addition of the 595 prefix for some on-campus lines.

UT’s new $6.1 million private telephone system was first completed in residence halls between fall quarter 1982 and winter quarter 1983. Telephone Services officials estimated that operating its own telephone system would save over $7 million over the next 10-year period.
