Engineering Society

An Engineering Society was organized January 30, 1893. In June 1894 the society published the University of Tennessee Scientific Magazine, which had 50 pages. In August 1896 the society published a second edition of the magazine, which was merged into the University Record in 1897.

English Department

Elements of the study of English, in the form of composition, rhetoric, and debating, were present from the founding of the institution in 1794. English Language Institute

The UT English Language Institute was established in 1978 and is operated through the Division of Outreach and Continuing Education. It provides residential and nonresidential courses for individuals who require English language skills.

Engravograph

In spring 1927 the UT Bookstore purchased an engravograph machine, which allowed putting names on items ranging from fountain pens to sunglasses and which the bookstore would do for a charge of twenty-five cents. Every fountain pen purchased had the name of the purchaser engraved upon it for free.

Entertainment Committee

The university Entertainment Committee was established in 1937 to bring persons of international note to the campus. It was composed of administrators, faculty, and students. Prior to 1890 the sole requirement for entrance was that male students must be at least 16 years old to enter the Collegiate Department (as opposed to the Preparatory Department) and pass the entrance examination.
