Charter Day was reinstituted in 1994 when the university was celebrating the bicentennial anniversary of its chartering and was celebrated annually through 1999 on the weekday closest to September 10. The flag of the university was first flown on Charter Day in 1969 in conjunction with the celebration of the 175th anniversary of the institution’s founding. In order to streamline the annual Honors Banquet and to give greater visibility to awards for alumni, faculty, and staff, election to the Academic Alumni Hall of Fame, Library Plaque designations, the Angie Warren Perkins Award, the Gene Mitchell Gray Pioneer Award, the Hardy Liston Jr. Award, and History Week Awards were presented at Charter Day, as was the Founder’s Day Medal. With the discontinuance of the Charter Day awards, the Perkins, Gray, and Liston Awards were moved to the Honors Banquet, and the others were put into abeyance.
