As part of the campus celebration of the bicentennial of the issuing of its charter, the Knoxville Philatelic Society worked with a UT Knoxville committee to design a commemorative cachet and US postal cancellation for the Charter Day celebration on September 12. The cachet is a number 9 envelope (accommodating eight-and-a-half inch by eleven-inch paper) that can be mailed in a number 10 business envelope. The design for the cachet, prepared by Ted Williams of the UT Public Relations Group, is a two-color drawing of Blount College, underneath which is the name of the institution (the University of Tennessee, Knoxville) and the words Celebrating 200 Years. On the back of the cachet, information within a box explains that the building on the front is UT’s first campus that was built by public subscription circa 1799 on frontier Knoxville’s town square at the corner of Gay and Clinch Streets.
