Bicentennial Postal Cancellation

The Knoxville Philatelic Society worked with the UT Knoxville Bicentennial Steering Committee to develop a special US postal cancellation to be affixed to bicentennial cachets or other items by Postal Service employees on September 12, 1994, for the Charter Day celebration of the institution. (The institution was chartered on September 10, but on Saturday, September 10, the UT football team was beating Georgia in Athens.) The cancellation, approved by the postmaster general, was the Torchbearer, whose torch just touched the edge of a stamp, thus canceling it. The postmark read “UT Bicentennial Station / Knoxville, Tennessee” and included the date. The Postal Service set up a special kiosk at Thompson-Boling Arena. Knoxville Postmaster Ray Asbury and UT Knoxville Chancellor Bill Snyder jointly had the first cachet canceled.
