On May 31, 2006, UT issued a notice indicating that the use of the property at the corner of Neyland Drive and Kingston Pike would transition from the University Club (its use for 39 years) to a Visitors Center. University Club members, led by President John Riley and its board of directors, sought to have the decision overturned, citing a clause in the original deed of conveyance that they believed indicated that the intent was for the property to be used as a faculty club through 2023. The university had been underwriting the club’s deficit of more than $300,000 for years, and the expansion of the club and acquisition of a liquor license did not substantially decrease the deficit. The University Club sought other locations and was successful in working out an arrangement with Club LeConte for University Club members to become a part of that club at monthly fees similar to those at the University Club. The facility on Neyland Drive became the Visitors Center on September 1.
