Oak Ridge Apartments

From 1967 to 1990, UT owned and rented apartments in Oak Ridge purchased to provide housing for students enrolled in the Oak Ridge Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. In May 1967 UT purchased 9 of 13 buildings that bounded a large square of green space in Oak Ridge, providing 18 one-bedroom and 16 two-bedroom apartments. UT’s purchase was financed with funds from the Woodlawn Apartments reserve and a $100,000 contribution from Union Carbide to acquire a building that was used as a student center for program participants. At the time the apartments were purchased, 38 students were enrolled in the program, but the Biology Division of ORNL suffered cutbacks, and by 1990 housing was needed for approximately a dozen students. An evaluation of the facilities in 1990 indicated that the structures, World War II e-housing, were in need of major repairs and upgrades, which would not have been financially feasible. The apartments were sold in 1990.
