On January 29, 1840, the Tennessee General Assembly passed an act changing the name of East Tennessee College to East Tennessee University. The act gave the trustees “the right, power, and privilege of holding real and personal property for the support of schools for the learned professions, to grant and confer medical degrees, [and to] use and enjoy all other rights, privileges, and powers usually conferred upon Universities.”
