YMCA meetings were held on campus in 1876, and the UT YMCA was officially organized on February 2, 1877, following a visit to the university by two representatives of the international committee of the YMCA. The first officers were D. B. Johnson, senior, president; James H. Cowan, a student in the Preparatory Department, vice president; Charles Heiskell, junior, secretary; and John M. Allen, freshman, treasurer. Until the YMCA Building was built, activities were held in East College.
