A three-part series, “Increasing Energy Productivity and Production in the World,” was the responsibility of UT’s Energy, Environment, and Resources Center, under a contract with the Knoxville International Energy Exposition (KIEE). The center was responsible for conceptual design, program management, and publishing the proceedings. UT published the three-volume set of proceedings.
The first symposium, held in 1980, focused on defining the nature and extent of the world energy problem. The second symposium, held November 3–6, 1981, provided in-depth analysis and discussion of the problems of world significance identified in the first symposium. A World Energy Congress, the third and final symposium, held in May 1982, after the Fair opened, dealt with alternative policy proposals based on the analyses and resolutions generated in the second symposium. Walter Lambert, UT’s Director of Federal Relations, was on leave to serve as executive vice president and vice president for energy programs of the fair.
