In January 1942 the Women’s Student Government Association established Tuesdays as Stamp Days and set up booths throughout the campus at which members of the university could purchase US Defense Savings Stamps. Stamp denominations were 10 cents and 25 cents and were pasted in folders which, when completed, could be redeemed for a war bond. People could exchange $18.75 for a bond that would mature at $25; $37.50 purchased a $50 bond; and $75, a $100 bond. The maturation period was 10 years. On the inaugural Stamp Day, 771 stamps were sold (326 twenty-five-cent stamps and 445 ten-cent stamps) for a total of $126.
