In 2003 the UT Foundation and the UT Institute of Agriculture initiated a Working Forest Program. Through this plan, individuals who wished to preserve forested land they owned could deed the land to UT to be managed under the guidelines of a board of advisors for the benefit of the Department of Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries. Forests donated are to be operated as university working forests—used for scientific, instructional, and service-related programs and to generate revenue from the sale of timber and other forest products. Property donated is to be held for a period of years agreed upon by UT and the donor at the time of the donation, but typically not to exceed 30 years or the lifetime of a specified individual.
