In May 1920 the Athletics Association established standards for the letters in track and swimming. Letters were also given in tennis and basketball. The standards for the track letters were the following: Running high jump—4′ 1”; standing broad jump—6′ 10”; hop-step-and-jump—19′; baseball throw—120′; shot put—19′; fifty yard dash—10 seconds. The standards for the swimming letter were as follows: Correct form in breast, side, and backstrokes; endurance—125 yards; diving: correct form in straight standing and running; lifesaving—all its phases.
