Women’s Equity Action League Charges UT with Sex Discrimination

In spring 1972 the Women’s Equity Action League filed a complaint of sex discrimination against UT with the federal Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. The charges were based on statistics concerning the employment of women in 1971. Some of the statistics cited include the following: 14.6 percent of the full-time faculty were women, but 26 percent of part-time employees were women. No women served as faculty in agriculture, biomedical science, engineering, law, or planning, and only one female faculty member was employed in architecture, communications, and at UTSI. Of the full-time female faculty, 73.4 percent held the ranks of instructor or assistant professor. In the College of Liberal Arts, there were 3 female full professors (117 male), six female associate professors (115 male), and 8 assistant professors (114 male). Twenty-four of the 198 people serving as administrative officers, deans, directors, and associate deans and directors were women.
