The Women’s Center opened in 1976 to serve as a clearinghouse for women’s issues and to provide service and assistance related to them. Located in the Carolyn P. Brown University Center, the center housed a library and maintained a list of referral sources for women’s issues. The center was designed to serve as a base for the Women’s Coordinating Committee, a student organization that provides programming on a variety of issues from a feminist perspective. Members of the council volunteered at the Women’s Center. The council initiated UT participation in the national Take Back the Night demonstration and coordinates the annual March celebration of Women’s History Month. The center’s first director, Cindy Straub, came to UT from Ohio State, where she had established a Women’s Services Center.
