In 1989 Whittle Communications made a commitment to provide, over a seven-year period, more than $500,000 to fund 20 “full-ride” scholarships for print journalism minority students in the College of Communications. In fall 1989 the scholarships (then valued at approximately $7,050) were awarded to two entering freshmen, one sophomore, one junior, and one senior. Thereafter, Whittle’s plan provided for offering the scholarships to five incoming freshmen each year over a four-year period. In 1993 Whittle Communications Limited Partnership announced it would underwrite a new minority scholarship, replacing the existing one, for a period of three years. Under the new scholarship program, two entering freshmen in any communications discipline were to be awarded a four-year, $30,000 scholarship. The period of commitment ended, so the scholarships also ended.
