Herbert S. Walters was one of the first individuals to establish a charitable trust through which 70 percent of his estate came to UT after providing a life estate for his wife. Walters died in 1973, and the trust provided that life estate until the death of his widow in 1989, when the trust reverted to UT. The income from the trust was designated for provision of undergraduate scholarships and provides four-year tuition scholarships to approximately one hundred students a year. The provisions of the trust require that recipients be East Tennessee residents and graduates of an accredited high school. They also must be willing to help support themselves and their higher educational aims through employment and must have a high school GPA and test scores that reflect strong academic potential. Financial need is a factor, and disabled students are given special consideration.
