In fall 1971 a massive campus-wide voter registration drive was held, and more than five thousand students registered to vote. A long legal battle involving two court cases was held with the Knox County Election Commission. In winter quarter 1972, the senate sponsored a voter registration drive, bringing the county registrars to campus to register over six hundred students.
