Volunteer Scholarships

The Volunteer Scholarship program was created in 2002 (with funds available for fall 2003) to attract outstanding Tennessee high school graduates, as an extension of the Bicentennial Scholarships, which required students to present an ACT score above 30 to be considered. The Volunteer Scholarships required ACT scores of 29 or 30 on the ACT (or SAT equivalent). Applicants additionally had to have a 3.75 average in the 14 units required for admission to UT. Holders of the $3,000-per-year Volunteer Scholarships were also invited to join the Honors Program. Students were required to maintain a UT 3.0 GPA to retain the scholarships from year to year. In 2006 eligibility for the scholarships was extended to include students transferring from Tennessee community colleges with the initial high school requirements. For fall 2015 a new Volunteer Scholarship program was initiated, combining the Achieve the Dream Grant, University Scholarships, and Out-of-State Excellence Scholarships. The new Volunteer Scholarships were available to both in-state and out-of-state students. The minimum requirements for the scholarships were set at a weighted core GPA of 3.8 and an ACT of at least 28. The scholarship award was set at three different levels, depending on the level of ACT or SAT scores, ranging from $3,000 to $8,000 for in-state students and $10,000 to $18,000 for out-of-state students.
