UT’s crowdfunding initiative that allows members of the university community and the general public to donate to on-campus projects is called VOLstarter. The Office of Alumni Affairs and Development began the device in 2013. Projects such as funding for an upgraded transmitter tower for WUTK (goal: $10,300; raised: $14,595 from 125 supporters); materials and programming for the OUTreach Center (goal: $500; raised: $605 from 10 donors); and funding for the IEEE Robotics Team, which raised $2,486 from 10 donors (166 percent of its goal) were examples of early crowdfunding success through the program.
