In the 2003-4 academic year, the College of Veterinary Medicine was one of only two colleges of veterinary medicine in the country to initiate use of digitized slides, replacing the traditional microscope for many of the slides that students view. Bacus Laboratories, the company that developed the technology, digitizes glass slides submitted by the faculty. The slides are then made available to students on the college’s intranet, with a personal computer taking the place of a microscope. The quality and resolution of the digitized slides are equivalent to viewing glass slides with a microscope.
