In a cooperative arrangement with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, UT acquired access to a vibroseis system in 1988. The system houses state-of-the-art seismological equipment in two large trucks for the purpose of conducting highly refined studies of the earth’s crust. The system was originally developed by the petroleum industry to detect oil and natural gas reserves without drilling. UT used the equipment for research studies in such areas as hazardous waste sites and earthquake studies.
