For 38 years the UT Police Department was housed in a temporary, barracks-like building at 1115 UT Drive. The space was too small and not appropriately configured. UT first announced that the department would move to the Lake Avenue Garage, but that plan was scrapped for cost reasons. In 2004 UT announced that the department would relocate to a modern facility on the first floor of the Eleventh Street Parking Garage. Work began on the $1.9 million, 21,000-square-foot headquarters in March 2004, and the department moved in January 2005. The new space was planned to be a very secure area, with space devoted exclusively to prisoner intake, as well as to locker rooms, an evidence vault, interview rooms, a workout facility, and appropriate facilities for dispatch and communications.
