UT Notes (Note-Taking Business)

A new business claiming to assist UT students opened on the Strip in 2002. The business offered lecture notes from specified classes for prices that ranged from “dollars on up.” Students could purchase notes from selected courses six days before a test. The notes taken within the six-day window were available for pickup the day before the exam. They were sold by section number. Notes came from hired note takers, who were required to have at least a 3.4 average and be enrolled in the class. The owners of the business, Dennie Laughlin and his son, Dennis Laughlin Jr., got the idea for the business from other successful, similar businesses throughout the country.
