In fall 1987, Tennesseans were offered the opportunity to purchase special UT license plates. Four designs were available—one for the statewide university, one for UT Martin, one for UT Knoxville, and one for the Medical Units in Memphis. More than fourteen hundred plates were ordered at a premium of $25 above the cost of a regular license plate. UT plates were among several offered to the public, with 80 percent of the revenue from the UT plates going to the Tennessee Arts Commission and the remainder to the Tennessee state highway fund. (The university received no revenue from the plates.) The plates became available in March 1988. In 1999 a Lady Vol license plate was offered, as was a UT National Championship license plate. In 2002 the original plates were replaced by an updated version, but the Lady Vol plate and the National Championship plate were still available.
