In 2001 Bumble Bear and Mace Bear came to campus as part of the Dogwood Arts Festival’s Bearfoot in the City public animal-arts campaign. Bumble Bear was attached to one of the large pillars of Hodges Library along Volunteer Boulevard, and Mace Bear was at the Cumberland Avenue entrance to the Hill. The program, modeled after the highly successful 1999 cows campaign in Chicago, featured fiberglass molds of bears sitting or standing, which were painted by local artists. UT, through Vice President Philip Scheurer, purchased the two bears at the conclusion of the program in 2002.
