The UT Medical Center opened in 1956 as the University of Tennessee Memorial Research Center and Hospital. Its name was changed to the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences-Knoxville in 1975 and to the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville in 1986. It is composed of two parts: University Memorial Hospital and the Graduate School of Medicine. The hospital is operated by contract with UT by UHS (University Health Services).
