University Magazine

The University Magazine was a publication of the senior class from 1841 to 1843. It was published monthly during the school session. It included material provided not only by members of the senior class but also by other students, members of the faculty, and friends of the university, including long articles of literary and scientific interest, poems, and items considered newsworthy. An occasional obituary told of a student’s death—usually the victim of a fever. A second publication with a similar name, the University of Tennessee Magazine was an outgrowth of a student publication begun in 1888, the University of Tennessee Student. In 1912 the publication became the University of Tennessee Magazine. The U.T. Magazine was not published in 1918–19 because of World War I. On May 18, 1920, the Publications Council discontinued it in order to establish a periodical that would be a combination literary and humor magazine. The change was made to make the magazine more popular and to provide an outlet for humor. The new publication was named the Mugwump.
