Planning for UT’s second major national development campaign (the first was the Tennessee Tomorrow campaign) began in 1991, and the campaign was formally kicked off in 1994. The original goal of $250 million, announced in 1994, was subsequently raised to $308 million. When the campaign closed on October 23, 1998, $432 million in gifts and pledges had been received. The UT Knoxville goal was $130 million, and $233,425,076 was raised, just under the original goal for the entire statewide campaign. The campaign chairman was William B. Stokely III, president of the Stokely Company. Senator (later Ambassador) Howard H. Baker Jr. served as honorary chairman. James Haslam, president of Pilot Oil, led the Knoxville Campus campaign. The Family campaign resulted in contributions by 70 percent of those solicited and a total in excess of $2 million contributed. The largest single gift was $12.4 million from the estate of Knoxville alumnus Clarence Brown and his wife Marion. There were 84 gifts of more than $1 million, and 556 gifts of more than $100,000.
