Tunnel Plan

In fall 1972 UT system campus planner Henry Morse described the plan for linking science buildings on the Hill through a system of tunnels. Beginning with the renovation of Austin Peay, which included a tunnel between Austin Peay and Hesler Biology, the plan was to create tunnels that linked life sciences buildings—Austin Peay, Hesler, the new Life Sciences Building (Walters) and an underground vivarium to be located approximately where Burchfiel Geography now is, with a landscaped plaza on top. On the east side of the Hill, the plan was to create a physical science complex by building a Multidisciplinary Science and Engineering Center and linking it to Dabney, Geology and Geography (now Earth and Planetary Sciences), and Physics. Cost constraints caused abandonment of the tunnel from Walters to Hesler, and a surface walkway from Walters to Austin Peay was planned.
