The Tom Black Track is marked for all collegiate and Olympic metric events and is equipped to handle the steeplechase, javelin, and hammer throw. There are five thousand permanent seats and a press pavilion. Twenty-five hundred temporary bleacher seats can be added. The first track was installed in 1921, around Shields-Watkins Field. The Tom Black Track is named for Knoxville business leader Tom Q. Black, whose $50,000 contribution from the Tom and Katherine Black Foundation made its development possible. The track was completed in fall 1966 and underwent a total facelift in 1992. In 2005 improvements to the track stadium were made, and the stadium around the track was named LaPorte Stadium in honor of the contributions of the LaPorte family of Elizabethton, Tennessee, and Houston, Texas.
