The Vol Timettes provide support for the men’s swimming team. UT’s Timettes were the country’s original group of the kind. When the swim team was constituted by Coach Ray Bussard in 1967, he also organized the Timettes, a group of 30 female students who acted as timing officials in Tennessee’s swim meets and cheered on the team from the Student Aquatic Center balcony. The Timettes also were charged with such matters as making banners for meets, keeping scrapbooks, and putting up posters around campus. In 1972 the group was featured in Sports Illustrated. They now time swimmers as a backup for the computer system and serve as a social and service organization affiliated with the swimming program.
