The Tennessee Engineer was first published in 1925 as a two-page pamphlet. It was created by the students and contained many student articles, but it also presented articles by outstanding engineers within the profession. In 1949 it awarded keys to outstanding staff members of the publication. The design of the key was a slide rule with the inscription “The Tennessee Engineer.” The key was gold with a black face. On its thirtieth birthday, in 1955, it produced a record 44-page issue. By 1964 it had one of the largest circulations of any college engineering magazine. The magazine was reorganized in 1965.
