One of the five Knoxville Research Centers of Excellence designated in 2001 by President Wade Gilley, this center sought to create new materials using computer-intensive modeling and experiments. UT and ORNL scientists in materials science and engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, and physics collaborated. This center was the genesis of the Joint Institute for Advanced Materials, which advanced and supplanted it.
