Temple Hall (1818 Andy Holt Avenue), which houses UT’s herbaria and teaching laboratories for the College of Nursing, was renamed Temple Hall by the UT Board of Trustees in March 2013, upon the recommendation of Chancellor Jimmy Cheek. The new name honors Oliver P. Temple and his daughter, Mary Boyce Temple. The designation continued the presence of the Temple name on the UT campus following the demolition of Temple Court to allow construction of the new student union. Two previous buildings and a street on campus had been previously named Temple: Temple Court and the large assembly hall on the agriculture campus, as well as the street that was renamed Volunteer Boulevard in 1966.
The building was constructed as an outpatient clinic for UT students and opened in 1975. Knoxville architectural firms Lindsay and Maples; McCarty, Bullock, and Holsaple; and Weeks and Ambrose were architects for the project. The board of trustees approved letting a construction contract of $830,838 to Selvidge and Merryman Construction Company at its June 1974 meeting.
The 15,295-square-foot building was opened for health clinic services on December 29, 1975, replacing use of the Weston Fulton Memorial Infirmary on Volunteer Boulevard, which was then modified for use by the Student Counseling Center. The large bronze plaque designating the Weston Fulton Memorial Infirmary was moved to the lobby area of Student Health Services and was moved again to the new Student Health Center in 2012. The Student Health Center was first accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations in 1992.
A $2.1 million renovation completed in 2014 repurposed the building to provide a state-of-the-art Health Information Technology and Simulation facility for the College of Nursing, jointly developed by the Colleges of Nursing and Engineering, and a similarly advanced facility to house the research collections of the institutional herbaria.
