On December 7, 1971, Chancellor Archie Dykes appointed a Task Force on Women, chaired by Dr. Lida Barrett, professor and head of the Mathematics Department, to evaluate the experiences of female students, faculty, and staff and to make recommendations in whatever areas improvements were needed. The task force issued its final report on November 14, 1972, making a total of 85 recommendations. Among the recommendations were the establishment of a permanent Commission for Women; creation of a women’s studies program; formation of an appropriate budget for women’s intercollegiate athletics; institution of annual salary analyses to determine whether women are paid equivalently to men, with action taken to correct any discrepancies; utilization of language terms and statements that obviously include both sexes; and implementation of the Affirmative Action Plan.
