UT purchased the Taliwa Court Apartments in South Knoxville for housing for faculty members and married students in 1957. The 80-unit complex of 14 buildings cost $529,760. Mrs. George C. Taylor, widow of former federal judge George C. Taylor (1908) and mother of UT trustee Jerome Taylor, gave one-sixth of the holding as a gift to UT. The apartments were built in 1947 at a cost of $593,289. The purchase replaced the 70 units of Sutherland Village that were being lost for construction of a National Guard Armory. In 1963 UT announced that it would build an addition of 60 two-bedroom units, each unit of which would contain two bedrooms, a kitchen, a bath, and a living/dining room combination. The three-story brick addition complex consisted of six buildings. The four center buildings each contained 12 apartments, and the end buildings contained 6 apartments each. The addition’s cost was approximately $680,000. The decision to sell both Taliwa and Woodlawn Apartments was made in 2001, and the university placed both complexes up for sale in 2003.
