Students Killed in Hit-And-Run Accident on Cumberland Avenue

Two students who worked together in the Reference Department of Hodges Library and were walking home from work just after midnight were killed when a green 1977 Buick Regal, traveling at a high rate of speed and driven by Gregory Darren Guhy, age 19, struck them. Guhy left the scene of the accident without stopping. Witnesses copied the car license number, and Guhy was arrested about three hours and one additional accident later. He had a blood alcohol level of .20. Killed were Rebecca Jordan, age 25, a student in business administration, and Kathleen Moberg, age 21, a liberal arts student.

Guhy was charged with vehicular homicide and second-degree murder. He was convicted of two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of leaving the scene of an accident involving death on Saturday, March 30, 1990, and was subsequently sentenced by Knox County Criminal Court Judge Randall Nichols to 30 years in jail for the second-degree murder charges and two 11-months-and-29-day terms and a six-month term for the misdemeanors of leaving the scene of an accident. The families of the two women also brought civil suits against The Annex, a Cumberland Avenue bar, and Tip’s Package Store. Annex owner Howard Tannenbaum closed the bar after receiving a summons in the matter.
