Student Issue, 2014—Lady Vols

The November 2014 announcement by Dave Hart that the Lady Vols name and logo would disappear except for the women’s basketball team, replaced by use of the Power T logo for all sports, caused an outcry among students and the general public. Facebook pages and petitions were quickly initiated and gained thousands of followers/signers. Former Lady Vols, donors, and Lady Vol supporters expressed the strong opinion that the move was inappropriate. They stated that it minimalized women’s sports; differentiated among women’s sports, implying that only the basketball team deserved to retain the nationally acclaimed designation; and replaced a brand viewed as representing excellence in competition and academics with a football logo. Students and supporters attempted to appeal to the board of trustees when appeals within the university were unsuccessful, but President DiPietro informed the board that it was an internal marketing decision, not a matter for the board.
