When a resolution that would allow individuals with valid Tennessee concealed carry permits to keep their secured firearms in their locked cars was introduced in the Tennessee General Assembly in February 2010, the UT administration openly opposed it. In March, the Student Government Association Senate considered a resolution expressing student opposition to the resolution, which drew a large crowd and mirrored the debates throughout the state on the issue. Parliamentary measures were attempted to stifle debate, but nonsenators were finally allowed to speak during the discussion, and those opposed to the SGA resolution expressed outrage at what they considered to be attempts to prevent them from stating their views. The motion to support opposing guns on campus passed with 23 for, 8 against, and 9 abstentions.
