Student Issue, 2009—Budget Cut

Following Chancellor Jimmy Cheek’s February 2009 report to the board of trustees about the impact of the budget cuts on the Knoxville campus, even with a 9 percent increase in tuition, students created Facebook pages, devised petitions to be sent to legislators, and demonstrated on campus. The Student Government Association implemented a letter writing campaign to legislators and the governor. A group of students in the College of Nursing began a Save the College of Nursing campaign on Facebook signed by more than three thousand people, and opponents of cuts to the foreign language programs became particularly vocal in an effort to preserve German, Russian, and Italian Departments with a full complement of programs. The allocation by Governor Bredesen of federal stimulus funds to assist with the crisis calmed the uproar.
