The Student Government Association was in an uproar at its October 23, 2007, meeting when Vice Provost Todd Diacon erroneously reported that the Faculty Senate had approved a new grading scale incorporating minus grades that the Undergraduate Council had passed at the request of the Provost’s Office. In fact, the senate had not approved the minutes of the Undergraduate Council, and had not, thus, approved it and was to consider it at its meeting on November 22. The SGA indicated strong student opposition to the change and subsequently requested that the grade of A+ be added to the scale. In November the Faculty Senate approved the addition of minus grades, but not the A+, effective for fall 2008. Questions arose about the impact of minus grades on students’ ability to achieve the required 3.0 to retain the HOPE scholarship in 2013, since all other Tennessee colleges and universities except the University of Memphis and ETSU did not use the plus and minus grades.
