In April 2006, as initial planning for the update of the UT Master Plan began, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration Denise Barlow announced that it might be necessary to relocate the Rock in order to build a parking garage on the site. The Student Government Association took a stand in favor of leaving the Rock where it was, and the Daily Beacon received numerous letters in opposition to moving the Rock for a parking garage. The parking garage on the site was replaced by the new Student Health Center, and the Rock was moved across the street in July 2009 to a location selected in part by SGA and other student leaders.
