Students joined members of the United Campus Workers at a Rally for Fairness on March 2, 2004, in front of the College of Law Building to protest the small (2 percent across-the-board) raise for UT employees, the unfairness of across-the-board raises, and the fact that the raise was mandated but no funds were provided by the State for its implementation. The Progressive Student Alliance performed a satirical play in late February that featured UT’s chief administrative officers and a board of trustee member (John Shumaker, Loren Crabtree, and Jim Haslam) with giant papier-mâché helmets chanting an assortment of phrases, such as “We’re here. We’re rich. Get used to it.” Other students carried signs protesting the across-the-board raise. Elaina Gibbs, a senior in anthropology and member of PSA categorized the protest as a “representation of the arrogance of the administration.”
