The adoption of a new book as the basis for Spanish 211 caused considerable discord among the twelve hundred students taking the course in 2003. Also, for the first time, 200-level Spanish had departmental midterms and finals, as well as similar chapter tests. Amy Gregory, coordinator of second-year Spanish and assistant professor in the Department of Modern Foreign Languages indicated that the second year of Spanish had developed a reputation as being easier than the first-year Spanish 150 course and was not preparing students well for the third-year course. The first departmental 211 exam was not counted, after a majority of students did poorly on it.
