In 2002 members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the Black Students Alliance were outraged to find that Kappa Sigma Fraternity had held a blackface party at RT’s Warehouse—a fraternity/sorority mixer. Vice Provost for Student Affairs W. Timothy Rogers released a statement apologizing for the “unfortunate display of racial insensitivity by members of a fraternity,” and Kappa Sigma Fraternity issued an official apology in the Daily Beacon. The UT chapter of Kappa Sigma was suspended by its national office several days later. A 12-point proposal was submitted to Kappa Sigma and the Division of Student Affairs at a meeting of leaders from black organizations on campus. The proposal called for the immediate expulsion of those wearing blackface; a public apology from the fraternity; creation of policies to protect students of color and other marginalized groups from discriminatory acts and hate crimes; creation of an honor code to be signed by all current and incoming students that required the signer to uphold the integrity of the school and respect others; the formation of a minority judicial task force and the creation of a student-run board to monitor the increase of hiring, tenure, and promotion of minority faculty and staff. In November a group of silent protestors—members of the Black Student Alliance, Black Law Student Association, Progressive Student Alliance, and the Sincere 7—marched from the Black Cultural Center past the stadium and Circle Park, and back to the Black Cultural Center. They carried signs that had definitions of blackface and other messages, such as “Teach history, not relive it.” The purpose of the march, according to organizers, was to educate people about racism.
